1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Help your child know that they are a part of something big, really big! Give them the opportunity to feel proud of a huge accomplishment! Make sure they are as ready as they can be for one of the biggest moments of their little life — starting school.  It’s a fun way to encourage even the youngest children to love books and reading!

Sign them up for 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten (1KB4K) at MPL!

The program in a nutshell:

  1. When you enroll your child in 1KB4K at the Medfield Public Library’s Children’s Department, their name will go on our Reading Road and you’ll receive a reading log to help keep track of every book you read.
  2. After every 100 books, bring your child in with their reading log and show it to a staff member in the Children’s Department. Your child ‘s name will move along the Reading Road (great photo op!), and they’ll receive a prize and a 100 Milestone Certificate.
  3. When your child reaches 1,000 books, they’ll receive a special prize and Certificate of Achievement.
  4. Finished all the steps? Congratulations! You did it! You gave your children a priceless gift — the readiness to read!  Stay tuned for more information about a special graduation ceremony for all the children who’ve completed the 1KB4K challenge!

Every child in your family can participate, from infant up to Kindergarten.  But if older children want to challenge themselves to read 1000 books before a new school year – they should go for it too!

Does reading 1,000 books seem totally overwhelming? We promise, it’s not as hard as you think!
3 books a day for 1 year = 1,095 books
1 book a day for 3 years = 1,095 books

You can:

  • Read the same book over, and over, and over
  • Read in any language
  • Listen to an audiobook
  • Storytimes count, too!

It’s simple, fun and we’ll help you get there!
